Acer Palmatum Mikawa is an amazing little tree. Bonsai and rock garden enthusiasts love the strange way the full sized (unusual for a dwarf) green leaves lay on top of each other like shingles and the way the short stems and close leaf nodes slowly form a natural bonsai - without pruning! Imagine a Chinese garden endowed with it's temple structures covered by the sweeping contours of carefully layered and ornately colored tiles and you will understand the effect Mikawa has on the viewer. The temples were designed this way to help create a spiritual feeling in the viewer. One of blending and merging the busy aloof human mind with it's natural source helping to create the peace it craves. By having the same character as the temples and their gardens Mikawa seems to do this in the same way. A very noticable and different variety. Max 3-4' tall and wide after many years, smaller in containers. A natural for any kind of container planting or on the sunny edge of a landscape among fern and hosta where it won’t be overwhelmed by taller specimens. Mikawa emerges a wonderful yellow green in spring and is green in summer. Fall is a GREAT yellow and orange and as an added plus it is equally interesting to view in the winter.
